PORTLAND, Ore. - More than a year after denying it, the newly elected mayor of Portland has admitted having a sexual relationship with a male teenager in 2005.

Sam Adams, who is openly gay, acknowledged the relationship in a statement Monday, after the Willamette Week newspaper broke the story on its Web site.

In Washington, D.C., for the inauguration, Adams will cut his trip short to issue a public apology Tuesday afternoon in Portland, said Wade Nkrumah, his spokesman.

Adams, 45, said he and the teen were together in the summer of 2005, shortly after the teenager turned 18 in June, and when Adams was a city commissioner. The revelations come nearly a year and a half after Adams and the teen said rumors of a sexual relationship between them were false.

"I lied at the time because I was afraid that people would believe untrue rumors being circulated by an undeclared mayoral opponent that I had broken a law involving sexual relations with a minor. But this is not a good excuse," Adams said in his statement.

Despite the rumors, Adams coasted to victory in his race, making Portland the largest U.S. city to ever elect an openly gay mayor. He was sworn in Jan. 1.

In his statement Monday, Adams apologized to the teen for making him lie about the relationship. He also apologized to colleagues and voters.

The young man, now 21, did not immediately return a request for comment.

It looks like we have a new batch of politicians engaging in repulsive behavior.

Sorry I didn't read the whole article...

And I've changed my mind about the situation.

Idiocy, predictably.

What laws were broken? IMO he was wrong to lie.

I guess as the saying goes, "It's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission", or in this case, " . . .than not to get elected". Lies, Sex and Politics! He lied because he was afraid about not being elected! I don't think it has anything to do about being right or wrong! In today's liberal wrong there is no such thing as right or wrong? Instead, it's all about who is forgiving and who is forgiven!

So now it's your opinion that it's wrong to lie?

I don't particularly care about what he did, and don't even care THAT much that he lied about it (at least he wasn't under oath, right?).

I do think he's done the gay community a horrible disservice. After saying stuff like this:

?I?m not going to go down without a fight because this is not true,? Adams said in September 2007. "This is one of the worst smears you can make against a gay guy. It preys on the homophobic stereotype that gay men cannot be trusted with young people."

From here.

If he had denied it without pulling the "feel sorry for me because I'm gay" line, or just admitted it outright things would have gone over much smoother. Portland is pretty fucking liberal so a little gay sex isn't going to surprise anyone.

What he did was legal. He lied in response to a smear campaign. While he certainly owes the apology he gave, I don't consider this repulsive behavior (and apparently neither does Portland because they knew he was gay when they elected him).

You are getting ahead of yourself, we have plenty of Dem's here that see nothing wrong with lying, some aren't sure and have an opinion that it's wrong or may be wrong they still haven't established it as fact.

One would naturally conclude (like you have) that he may be prone to lying about other things but once again we have Dem's here and they will not see a correlation.

As someone who isn't a Dem, let me tell ya, Republicans have no room to talk when it comes to dishonest politicians.

This.

EVERYONE lies about something in their lives. So the guy had a perfectly legal relationship with a consenting adult, oh no! That's nobody's business but theirs, so unless he's under oath or something, who cares?

There's unproven as of yet allegations the younger man was only 17 at the time their relationship started. Whether anything happened prior to him turning 18 is up in the air.

I forget what the age of consent is in Oregon.

It's illegal to have consensual sex with an 18 year old?

That's news to me.

But you are 40 and cruising for teens? Baha! He's done.

it's a lot less worse than all those stories of 30 and 40 year-old teachers sleeping with their 13-14 year-old students.

he's not that bad looking either. I'd totally have hit it when I was 17-18 ;)

If a man doesn't want to kiss and tell, that is his God given right. It takes some real busybody jackoffery to think anyone has and right to snoop into the personal affairs of others.

Unless they're a Republican in a men's bathroom, then it's fair game. Right?

If he did it in his own bathroom and was not a bigot then I would agree. But in that case he broke the law, let alone has been against gays issues.

Nice troll roll.
