Hello my friends,
Would you mind give me information about how "Portable Softwares" can work in OS?
What's difference between non-portable softwares?
Thanks

My principal email program (Eudora Pro 7) is portable. It can be installed on a CD or a thumb drive - all it needs is a link. It can be copied into a HDD and simply linked. All dlls and whatevers are self contained. It does not involve the Registry, so "installation" is not required. Another one I have used is the old PrintArtist. May programs in the 80s did not require installation. They were self contained on a CD or floppies. They were portable, and still are.

Hello Corkyg: Ï am a newcomer to this site, but not a newcomer to Eudora! You seem to be the successor to the late deeply lamented John H. Myers (RIP) when it comes to this magical email program, which I have used for many years. I apologize in advance for this long post but I figured the more you know about these issues perhaps the better idea you might have about why they are happening! Recently I switched to a new laptop. My son managed to make it work on WIndows 7 (Windows 10 is simply beyond the pale for an old fart like me). Everything was fine for a couple of months. But a couple of days ago, my "alias" email address - set up to get around Gmail's limitation of 15 g of data per email address (which I chew up in about a year...) simply stopped working. I'm getting various messages that the address is not valid. It worked for ten years, so I can't figure out why not now! Also, when I tried to set up yet another account (jimkenzie4@gmail.com), I go through Eudora's process to create the account using all the same values as my other accounts. When I try to access it through Eudora, I start off with no password as per JHM's old suggestion. I key that in accurately (I've checked a dozen times!!) but when I try to access it I get two error messages - "There has been an error transferring your email. I said MAIL FROM:<jimkenzie4@gmail.com> and then the SMTP server (smtp.gmail.com) said 530 5.7.0 https://support.google.come/mail/?p=WantAuthError u4sm6354647qkh.59 - gsmtp ". Then immediately below that, another error message which starts off the same way, then "...I said PASS (shhhh! Don't tell anyone!) and then the POP server [jimkenzie4@pop.gmail.com] said ERR [AUTH] Username and password not accepted." I can access this account using that password via the gmail web portal, but not through Eudora. The fact that these two seemingly separate issues are happening at the same time makes me doubly suspicious! Also, since Eudora doesn't seem to work under Windows 10 (another major reason not to switch to Win 10) I can't help but think that the fact that support for Windows 7 just ended and these issues cropped up can be anything other than a coincidence. Any assistance you can provide on either or both would be warmly welcomed! Cheers, Jim K from the frozen north...

The problem with necro posts is that situations change. I had to give Eudora up about 2 years ago. It could not handle todays security rules. Today I use a variant of WinMail. My principal tool for screening mail is MailWasher Pro. I know that support for Win7 has ended, but I can't use Win10 unless I buy new hardware, and at this point in my life, that is not going to happen.

Hi CorkyG: Thanks for the reply, even if you have now abandoned dear old Eudora! I'm sticking with it because I just don't have the patience to try something new. Like you, I too am sticking with Windows 7. Ironically, I bought a new laptop which was running Win10, and several computer shops said it couldn't run on Win7. My son who is a software programmer found a way to make it work, although I'm getting a variety of "Your copy of Windows is not genuine" messages. Still, beats trying to make Win10 work.

RE Eudora - I just cannot comprehend how all of a sudden my "alias" email address is no longer accepted, nor why I cannot add a new address to my roster. Do you have any suggestions as to who might have taken up the Eudora mantle? I've seen some posts from Jack Jackson and Katrina Knight which sound lilke they have a good grasp of it. Meanwhile, thank you for helping so many people fly the Eudora flag for so long. You've helped a lot of us! I'll stop bugging you now! Be well. Cheers, Jim

Thanks, Jim. My basic problem was that I moved, and had to change ISPs, and the new ISP's mail handler would not accept Eudora for security setting, and Eudora could not meet the new standards. I still have Eudora on hand to access years of archived email.

Hi again CorkyG:

I know I promised to stop bugging you about my Eudora problem - after changing laptops and trying to make Eudora work under Windows 7 when the laptop was originally sold with Win 10, why Eudora refuses to allow me to add new personalities (I add it, I can acces it under the gmail web interface but when I try to acces it via Eudora it says "ERR[AUTH] Username and password not accepted"). I'm just wondering if there is anybody else you can recommend who might have assumed your "John H. Meyers Memorial Mantle" as the resident expert on all things Eudora?

Cheers,

Jim

Sorry, Jim. It has been well over a year since I had to abandon Eudora as my active mail handler. I really don't recall any other users. I still keep it on my system to access and read archived email files it created. Eudora's problem was that it could not comply with my ISP's security standatrds. My basterdized version of Winmail works perfectly.

All of this occurred in January of 2018. Here is what my ISP told me: That was a bit over 2 years ago.
"These settings control how email messages are sent and received by your Cox.net Email. They were likely set up years ago and do not meet newer industry standards. Because your Cox.net Emailsettings are unique to your individual email programs on your devices such as your phone and computer, Cox is unable to make the changes on your behalf.

"For your protection, after January 25, 2018, any devices with outdated settings will no longer be able to send or receive messages from your Cox.net Email until the setting changes are made
."
