Just picked up 2 2Gb flash drives for $13 a pop (thank you Wal-Mart). I'm looking for a portable MP3 player that I could plug a flash drive into and have it play songs off of that. Is there even such a beast?

Thanks

I'm thinking Memory Sticks / Thumb Drives / Keychain Drives.

There are not many MP3 players with USB ports. The only ones that I know of are the ones with 30GB+ hard drives, because those USB ports are usually used for card readers and backing up data from the card in the card reader onto the player's HDD.

cheap and does exactly what you need.

Ehhh... it may be hard to navigate 2GB's worth of songs without a screen. As for the other players, yeah, they should work, but the problem is that they're already 20GB+. I think the OP is looking for a cheapo player whose capacity can be increased cheaply by just sticking a thumb drive in it.

i have one that uses thumb drives, but it plugs straight into the cigarette lighter, so it is only portable in the sense that it goes in your car

I checked out the VR3 and the only bad part would be I'd have to park my car in my office building. Though I think it's a splendid idea. I'm sure there are laws against that. :) I'm trying not to spend over $50 on this if possible $70 max. Thanks for these tips and if you have any others please post them.

I seem to recall reading about an MP3 player that converts a USB thumbdrive to storage space for the MP3 player... but it was a few years ago and I haven't seen it since.

That wouldn't work. You'll notice that the controls and headphone jack are on the USB part of the device.
