Tom Tom 400 I think?
or
Garmin C340 (the c330 does not read out street names - it tells you '200 yrds turn left')

Update:

So i bought myself the Alpine Blackbird. The garmin nuvi 350 and the garmin c550 were in the race. However the one i wanted garmin c340 wasnt around at BBY. Since i get employee discounts i bought the Blackbird..

The C550 has some added features that the Nuvi doesnt (bluetooth) but ideally they are both teh same, the blackbird is cheaper by 100 bucks. I am charging my unit up.. hope to take it for a spin later on tonight.

what's special of the nuvi???

these reviews are nuts.. all i want is something small, easy to operate, and has text to speech for the directions.

small, easy to operate, has text to speech for directions, plays mp3, plays audio books, has a very nice windshield mount. its very light weight and fits in a shirt pocket. i'd like to see you fit a tom tom in your shirt pocket.

I am looking for a GPS as well and did some research.

Don't get a TomTom. They use TeleAtlas database which is inferior than Navteq in the U.S. European database is vice versa, TeleAtlas is much better. In addition, TomTom's customer service is just horrendous according to many former buyers. A manager of top 5 online GPS store said he gets way more returned TomToms than any other brand.

I would go with Garmin, they use Navteq. Although the interface looks a bit dated, it is exceptionally good at what it does. Go for Nuvi 350 like many recommended aleady.

The only bad thing about Nuvi is once the battery goes bad, it is irreplaceable.

I got a Sony Nav-U NV-U70 for $299 after a $100 MIR from Outpost.com last month. Works great and is hard to beat at that price (IMHO).

1) Why is playing MP3 important with a GPS. I have NEVER understood that one. Playing music through a crappy speaker vs your car sound system. Yeah, grrrrrrrrrrrrreat.

2) Plays audio books. Again, unless this thing has line-out, I don't see what the big deal is. And that's one more cable hanging down from your windshield.

3) Fits in a shirt pocket? You regularly carry your GPS around in your shirt pocket?

I just bought the Nuvi 360 for 688 at tigergps or something. I priced matched it to some other site. If I were you I'd save a bit more and grab that. It's the greatest handheld I've used to date.

the sony doesnt have so much in POI's .. and i dont need teh mp3 player and audio book funtionality.. i want it to do a good job in what it is designed for.. navigation! and be able to read out streets to me and say left here, right there.. rather than in 200 yards turn left.

which is what my microsoft streets and trips 2006 does.

Are there any good GPS systems that are cheap? Even if it requires being hooked up to a laptop, are there any good, cheap ones?

What about Harry Harry?

Or <cough> Dick Dick.

MS Dawn, please. TheGoodGuy is trying to make an informed decision as to which GPS Navigation device to purchase for his automobile. Enough of these silly jokes! Harry Harry and Dick Dick aren't really product names!

What do you mean specifically? Is it missing some POI's that you need? Straight out of the box, it's loaded with POIs. I haven't bothered installing the installation CD on my notebook to see about adding more, but by default it's fully loaded with POIs
