Portable HDD shutdown question...

I have 2 Seagate 3.0 USB FreeAgent GoFlex HDD's I use for system backup, rotating them out each week. Because they are plugged into the USB 3.0 port, even after I shut the computer down... they are still spinning. I use the 'safely remove hardware' function to make sure it's done writing or whatever, but, even then... it's still spinning.

My concern is pulling the cable even after all this and the head not being parked/damage to the disk. I suppose I could power down the system and then switch off the master power...

Anyone have experience with these Seagate portable drives? 😕
