portable firefox profile issues

guys guys,

i have portable firefox on my machine, latest version. problem is as so:

when i open firefox, it opens my profile, wonderful.

however if i don't have any FF windows open and click on a link, firefox opens with the "empty" profile, so does not have any of my plugins or anything.

if i have a FF window open, then it opens a new window with my proper profile and loads the page.

any idea how to tell this stupid application to open MY profile every time? as far as i know i don't even have another profile set up on this machine for portable FF.
