Portable external HDD for file server

I'm looking to use a WD MyPassport portable HDD for my home file server which is on 24/7.

*Are there any durability concerns for these portable drives for constant usage?

*Anyone raid several portable HDD via USB?

if you want to raid you can :

1. use esata with expander
2. use a raid enclosure which presents your drives as a raid.

raid over usb seems awefully bad idea.
