portable DVD player?

I have a friend that wants to buy a portable DVD player for Christmas. She has asked me for advice but I don't know much about them because they always seemed like a waste to me. She wants to spend about $350 - $450. Any suggestions?

I was looking at the Toshiba SD 2000 but like I said I don't know much about them.

Thanks.

Well, you could always get a used Laptop.

14.1 + screen is definately attainable in that price range.

Plus it would have many other functions. The only drawback I see in using mine for a protable DVD is the bulk. I was at my grandparents farm for Thanksgiving, and we watched a few movies on my laptop. much better than a 13" B&W tv (the actual alternative)

I'd say wait a year. Last year portable dvd players were in the 500 - 600 range. Now I'm seeing them for 100-150 non widescreen. In a year I'm betting a 7" widescreen will be under 200 bucks. The one I saw at costco was 7" widescreen with coaxial inputs and s-video out puts. Had a remote too. I have always used my ps2 as a dvd player and was thinking about getting one of the many sub 50 dollar dvd players out right now but decided to wait thinking that I will soon be able to buy a portable for under 200 that I can use as a normal dvd player next to my tv and then have the added bonus of being able to take it in the car with me.

I was at CostCo last weekend and saw 3 portable DVD Players all under $350.

Definitely check out CostCo/Sam's Club FIRST.

HSN.com had one 7" WS for ~225 AC/AR. Seemed pretty nice.

Been a few deals on 4+" ones around for less than $200.

I agree w/ the 350-450 is insane. I don't know how they can charge so much, DVD+7"LCD+LiON battery massproduced shouldn't be so expensive. Must be some nice profits to those.

Laptops are nice but battery life probably won't be enough to watch a full movie, especially on a used one.
