I am looking to buy a portable DVD player. I want it to play DVD, DVD-R, CD, CD-R/RW, VCD, DivX, AVI, MPEG-4, MP3, WMA and JPEG formats. a long battery life would be nice as 2.5 hours doesnt really cut it but will sacrifice battery life for quality if the price of the player is good. I will need to play this in a car mostly so good sound is necessary.

here is what i am looking at right now. The Toshiba SD-P1850 Portable DVD Player with 8" Widescreen LCD. http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-SD-P1850-...een/dp/B000ELC148#moreAboutThisProduct

I dont know if purchasing the 2900 would give me a better player or not.

If you own a dvd player that fits this can you give me your comments or suggestions?

the philips ones were pretty good, i had the 8.5" one. 6 hour battery life, about 200 dollars. good clear screen plays mp3s/avi, nice design and pretty loud speakers. the screen is bright and clear, unlike some of the competition which have sort of muddy screens. none of the cheap ones have high resolution screens though, but its good enough for the price.
the 7" screen version is about 150 bucks. in the reasonable price range area i haven't seen anything that compares with the philips models. get much more expensive and its laptop territory and theres no point in getting the single function device anymore.

thanks for your reply. Reading some reviews of the philips pet824 and have some questions. Quite a few people claim it is noisy on startup. noisy enough that some people have returned the unit and got something else. Is it noisy?

How is the sound quality? Apparently the speakers on the bottom, which sounds like a poor design, and some people report that the sound isnt loud enough. I do plan on using this for my kids as well so headphones dont work out as well.
Also is there more than one headphone jack? so i can plug in more headphones?

Does it have problems playing DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, or DVD+RW?

the drive does seek with a bit of noise at the start, but its not a deal killer for me. its just mechanical noise during disk initialization. people who expected total silence might have been irked i guess, discmen don't do that obviously. its the only gripe about the unit i can think of, small one considering how it compares to the competition. main thing is that the screen is crisp and bright, so many are washed out with grey instead of black meh.
the sound is fine, i don't know what the requirements for sound are from the people complaining, it is portable and small after all, dont expect home theater, its l ike a laptop and has sound as such. the sound is good considering its size. its definetly enough for in car use. its got two jacks, but even if it didnt there are splitters for less than 5 dollars.

at walmart and other places they sell soft cases with straps for hanging these on the back of car seats. think the walmart one was about 10 bucks.

another question came to mind. with the philips pet824, how is the aspect ratio? some players will only play divx files in 16:9. Do you know how this player plays divx files?
and do you know if it plays mp3s stored on DVD's?
