Portable DVD player or $800 or less notebook?

I really only need to watch DVD's, not a computer, but at around $300 for a portable dvd player and $800 for a notebook makes me consider my options. The notebook would use AC power 99% of the time and be used to watch dvd's on trips and basic email stuff, nothing else. What minimum processor do you need to watch dvd's? What's a basic, quality, low-end notebook that will play dvd's?
