Portable DVD Player Issues

Hi all,

I was recently given a Sony portable DVD player (model DVP-FX700) by some random guy at my gym with the knowledge that it didn't work quite right, and if I could fix it, I could keep it. The problem with the unit is that DVD playback will begin, but will freeze after a few minutes of playback (in fact, the longest I've been able to use it is for 5:29) with no particular pattern at all. When starts to happen, you can hear the laser moving back and forth trying to find where it was, playback will stutter, and then freeze entirely. After about a minute or so of trying to find its place, it just "gives up" for lack of a better term, and then the disc stops spinning. It will then give a couple of attempts to spin the disc again but only manage a few revolutions. After all of this happens, the unit displays its splash screen and says "DISC ERROR" (no indication of a specific error). It must then be power cycled in order read any discs again. It plays CDs fine with no issues whatsoever. I'm thinking that I need to replace the laser/laser assembly, but I don't have much experience in this area so I'm completely sure. If this is the case, does anyone know where to get parts for a portable DVD player, or should I just watch eBay? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Tom
