Been always meaning to buy one since it was so handy when I was a kid. Any recommendations on the type and size I should go for? I do want to jam on it, does the new portable ones allow you hang on it ?

Here are some I found in costco, I picked costco since they're markup are never over 15% and they have a good return policy if I don't like it. Would 50" be big enough?

Spalding 52"

Most of the portable ones aren't designed so you can hang on it. Dunking's fine on a breakaway rim, but those things will never be heavy enough (if portable) to withstand prolonged hanging on them. Why hang anyway? So you can slap the backboard :p

Guess, it's not really hanging on it, but to be able to pull down on it hard and slap the backboard :)

yes, at least 50", 52 is better...

go spalding... that nba jerry west logo looks good... also, unless they outsource it... reebok usually makes shoes, i'd go w/ sports equipment... also, you don't need to tilt the spalding to move it... that helps a lot, to tilt it, you'd need usually 2 people around.
