hey-
Last year I decided that MP3 players were going to be the next step in portable audio, so I went out and bought a Diamond Rio [the original model]. I was very happy with it; the fact that with proper management I could get about 10-12 songs on there, even though at that point the quality started to drop. Then it broke.

This year, I recieved a sony MZ-R70 portable minidisc player/recorder and I couldn't be happier with the thing. At first I thought that minidiscs would be a step back in quality, but using the optical input hooked up to my PS2, I get great sound quality. The player is a little larger than the Rio but it feels sturdier and the fact that I can have hours of music on a handful of $2.00 minidiscs is sweet.

Anyone else have a similar experience or think that MP3 players are still better for portable audio?

with minidisc you have to wait for it to record in real time which really sucks, mp3 players on the other hand record as fast as you can transfer the information and in my opinion alot better. mp3 player's memory cards are expensive but now with the rio volt you have the option of very cheap media to hold your songs.

make one for the car???
how you supposed to upload the info onto the deck?
my only guess would be smart media cards. but then, 128MB of smartmedia would cost just as much as an mp3 player itself!

anyway, I think mp3 and MD are tied when it comes to portable audio... it really depends on personal preferences though... if you like listening to variety while travelling, the MD would be best because of the portable media. MP3 would be better if you don't mind listening to 12 of your favorite songs in loop. And then there's transfer rates. it takes A LOT of time to make an MD, while each mp3 takes about 5-10 seconds to copy!

in the end, I would prefer mp3 player over MD. don't like buying and carrying extra media with me and really don't mind listening to my favorite 12 songs on repeat. That's cuz you would probably change the songs everyday on your mp3 player anyway (only takes a few minutes). Whereas a MD would take an hour to record :(

I've got both

Minidisc, you can carry a bunch of $2 discs, and it has somewhat better sound quality.

Mp3, it's smaller, doesn't skip at all, and records fast.

I normally use the MD, except for running, or if I wake up half an hour before class and want something new to listen to.
