Is this what they mean by swamp cooler?

Seems like a good price for a powerful and portable indoor a/c unit.

no, a swamp cooler isn't a A/C unit
it just uses evaporative cooling, i.e. water with air blowing through it

Ah ok ... so I guess this is an a/c unit not a swamp cooler.

Thanks.

I wonder if that thing is any good. If you findout, let me know. My windows are all odd sizes and none of them seem to be near an outlet.

I thought that the hot air produced or sucked out by the air conditioner is needed to go out doors otherwise you defeat the purpose of an a/c unit. But I guess they must have engineered this bad boy to get around that, hence the in door a/c non-window mounting unit.

When it's hot I like to go over to my ex girlfriend's house, she's an ice princess. You just need to stand a few feet from her and your noonoo will shrivel up.

It vents the hot exhaust air to the outside by using a window/door adapter kit.

Sweet - I like that thing! I was thinking of making my own unit similar to that at my last apartment as it had the windows that slid sideways. I think it's odd that there's no water drainage on it though.

I think I need one.

BTW - these type units are widely used in Europe
we had several we used in various test equipment trailers when i worked over there, they are just as good as any other A/C unit (as long as the vent is correctly directed outside)

they obviously cost more than "normal" american units, that one linked is $400, a "normal" window 9k btu unit is more like $200 i believe

I've been looking at these type of ACs too because my windows do not open vertically but are cranked outward.

I asked around alot and found out if the portable AC does not get vented out the window (which I cannot do), there are some that do not require any kind of venting whatsoever. The problem is, the advertised BTU goes down significantly if it is not vented externally.

I saw a Haier at BB for about $450 which was advertised at 9000 BTU. Without venting, it is only 5000 BTU.

If you are buying one of these and don't plan on venting outside, you should ask them what the BTU is without venting.

Doesn't look all that efficient with that tube venting the hot air. I bet the eficiency rating isn't all that hot. Har har I said hot...meh.

We were at CostCo B&M tonight and I saw an actual swamp cooler, quite different.

They had some AWESOME deals on a/c units.

Sharp, Panasonic, Fedders and Haier starting at $119 for a 5,000 BTU a/c.

My mom has a similar unit, called a 'Penguino'. It works OK, 9000BTU will only cool like one or two rooms.

Here in CA, it's dry enough to use a swamp cooler. I have a 4700CFM unit (!) it cools my house pretty well, and a hella lot cheaper than an air conditioner.
