Port Scanning

I got an alert from Sygate firewall saying that somebody is scanning my tcp ports: 8888, 8000, 8080, and 80 from 159.226.126.86...should I be worried? should I do anything?

Also, since i'm a complete noob in these aspects, are there any favorite noob books that I can read about networking so that I can at least get some information and background on networking?

Nah, it was likely a random scan of a subnet looking for vulnerable hosts. It's farily common. Some jackass script kiddie most likely.

scanning port 80 is something often done by an ISP to make sure you are not running a webserver.

besides I wouldnt worry about port scans if you got a _hardware_ firewall.

it should be ok, as long as your firewall is blocking them.
there's always someone port scanning somewhere, it seems... at work, i always see port scans from almost everywhere in our firewall logs.
just double check to make sure your firewall rules are ok

you could also traceroute that source IP (in the command line, tracert 159.226.126.86)
you can find out "who" that ip is... as a previous poster mentioned, it could just be your isp.

your best bet is to keep the discussion about VPNs in your thread and not to hijack another thread.
