Port routing question...

I just got my new Vonage service hooked up, and everything works great, except for Bit Torrent. I had port 6881 forwarded in my router's setup (Linksys 4 port) to the system that ran the BT client. Now that I have my Vonage equipment in the loop, it doesn't seem to work.

I had it setup before...

Cable Modem (SB5100) --> Linksys Router --> Systems

It's now..

Cable Modem --> Motorola Vonage Unit --> Linksys Router --> Systems.

I'm assuming this is not working because it now has another firewall of sorts to get through.

Any ideas on how I can fix this?

I know I can hook it up like this...

Cable Modem --> Router --> Vonage --> Systems

...but Vonage advises you to avoid that if possible.

Any ideas? I'm guessing I need to do something in the Vonage equipment's setup menu? I can access it, but I'm not sure what to change.

Any help would be appreciated...

Also, I use BT to download LEGAL DJ mixes only.

As far as I know they like the Vonage in front of the router so it gets top priority on bandwidth. If your router can do QoS you can set the VoIP ports to maximum.

Yeah, Vonage suggests keeping their VOIP box in front. Well, I don't know if this helps, but here is the advanced setup tab for the Vonage box.

Also, my router is the Linksys BEFSR41, with the 1.45 firmware. I didn't see any setting specifically called QoS.

Any ideas would be appreciated. Someone suggested I'm probably having problems because both the router and the Vonage box are doing NAT.

Thanks for the replies so far. I was warned my thread might get ignored because I mentioned BT.

I'll try that as a lasr resort. Since none of the network gurus in here can offer any help on my port forwarding problem, I'll probably just have to resort to disconnecting the Vonage box when I need to grab a mix.

Thanks numb and PorBleemo, at least you tried to help.

I have my vonage router behind my Linksys one, it didn't seem to make a diff in VQ(was still choppy during downloads) when it was in front of the Linksys. I bought the wrt54g thinking QoS would work, but still gets choppy. So I just left it behind my linksys router. It didn't need any forwarding and one less router to mess with. Otherwise just use the port forwarding in the Vonage router to point at the other router.

Thanks. Yours get's choppy when downloading? I was downloading a huge file (normally, not BT) today while talking, and I had no choppiness. I was thinking of enabling DMZ to the routers IP in the Vonage menu...

After some experimentation today, it appears BT still works, it's just not very fast downloading. I use Azeurus (sp?), and it keeps the status thing yellow all the time, which indicates a NAT issue. It still works though, so I may just leave it like that. The files I usually download aren't huge anyhow...at most maybe 300mb.

Thanks again...

OT, but can I assume by your user name you are a fellow stang owner?

Former stang owner🙁 But you're the first person that got it right and didn't think I was a cop because of it😛
:beer::cookie: for you

Thats a clean looking car especially since you drive it in the winter! I got stuck in the snow one day with mine here in MN, and never drove it again in the winter. That thing was all over the place😛 I had an '88 GT, but couldn't afford to keep it and not drive it so sold it to pay for my SHO. I still have an extra set of the GT seats that I use to watch tv in, and a set of KB subframe connectors(that I never got installed) stowed away in the basement. Trying to find a pic of it, but I think I erased it accidently....Anyway it was white with pony rims😀

Yeah, mine used to be all over the place until I picked up a set of Blizzaks. They aren't cheap ($100ea), but it's flat out amazing how much easier the car is to drive in the winter. I got the Blizzaks in a narrower 215/60/16 size and mounted them on the stock 16 x 7 pony rims, and those are now my winter set. I picked up a set of 17 x 9 AT Italia's (in the pic) and put on four 245/45/17 Dunlop SP8000's for the rest of the year. Now when bad weather is coming, I can simply pull out the floor jack and switch.

I've done a ton of mods to the car, and I did a lot of suspension mods, so it handles waaaay better than stock. These fox bodies are downright scary with the stock suspension.

Anyway...thanks for the help. Shoot me a PM if you ever want to talk cars or whatever...
