Port OS/progs to old system?

Hey guys,

Right now I run WinXP (i know :-() on an Athlon XP 2000+. I just bought a much faster hard drive (old was ata33) and want to port my old drive (windows, preferences, programs and all) to an old P3 500. Can anyone offer any advice on how to do this effectively? Every time I've tried in the past I've ended up reformatting. Are there any special porting programs out there or is there another work-around?

Thanks for your help,
Mike

What's wrong with WinXP? And why are you porting everything to an old system?

AFAIK you'll have massive problems with the OS itself; it'll BSOD on you for sure when you try to boot because it's looking for hardware that's not there.

You should just reinstall. Back up all the files you need on CDR.

I don't know if porting is the write word for it since you're not really trying to get it to run on a different platform (still x86) but who cares. If you're usign a different chipset, processor, vid card, etc.. and you try to use your XP 2000+ image on the older system, you'll probably run into headaches. Are you going to run winxp on the older system? If so, it MAY work since winxp is better at detecting new hardware than some older MS products, but it's always best to do a clean install. Like amnesiac said, just bakc up the stuff you need, do a fresh install and reinstall. Probably faster to do it the long ways, then it would be to spend time fixing problems later because windows didn't like such a drastic change in hardware. You might be able to boot into safe mode and remove all the hardware from device manager, and then reboot xp normally and see if that keeps you from having problems too.
