How are ports of entry in the middle of the country used? Specifically, we have one just outside of town here in the middle of Colorado, on the interstate (I25) highway. How would it be used for?

I can understand what they are on a border, and how one would be used at an international airport. Would the local ports be use for pre-inspecting good manufactured nearby and being exported by truck?

http://www.coloradodot.info/travel/commercial-vehicles/colorados-port-of-entry-locations

Colorado State Patrol's Port of Entry has ten stationary facilities located in key positions throughout the state. These facilities are located on most major highways that a motor carrier operator would use to either enter or exit Colorado.

I believe, the purpose if that is a commercial vehicle enter the state, you are supposed to check with them to make sure you meet all the state's regulations.

aka weigh stations. which one are your refering to? i25 north of denver? catches trucks coming in on the routes like 287 or from kansas/nebraska that dont take the interstates. also, there is a lot of oilfield traffic up that way and it catches it going in/out of ft. lupton.

Oh... that's what they call weigh stations? That term, I'm familiar with.

Yeah, Fort Collins. That truck traffic using 287 to/from Laramie instead of just going straight I80 & I25 through Cheyenne has always been a nightmare. It's miserable having that truck traffic go through town and it makes a nice, scenic stretch of 287 something of a death road.
