port forwarding vs. port triggering

i was just looking around in my router, and wondered what is going to be more secure

port forwarding or port triggering

it looks like triggering- the ports aren't open all the time, but might have problems when doing transfers that are lengthy in time

port forwarding i was told the destination computer can't see your internal/private IP address

so what one is better for just a basic home user?

and what kind of IP info and protocol info should i have to enter when making switches if i have to enter any at all?

It is not a matter of vs. or better, each one has to be used according to the the issue at hand.
