port forwarding problem

so i have bellsouth and a westell modem that has a built-in router with nat. i just recently bought a WRT54G. i'm not using it for wireless yet cause my cards haven't got in. we use two computers to connect to the internet.

i was wondering what's the easiet way to open ports? do i have to forward ports on my modem, then my router? or can i just set my modem in dmz and forward ports on my router? i tried to port forward doing various things, but it doesn't seem to be working so i was hoping someone would share their opinion.
