I want to use my server as a web server. My service provider has given us an Arris Cable Modem and a static IP. The problem is I cannot forward port 80, or any other port. I spoke to the service provider, but apparently they are charging a pot of gold for the same(they say they will have to forward port 80 at their end; I think they must have blocked it.) Being given to understand that there is no port forwarding to be done in cable modems, is tthere any way to work around this. Pls. help

do you have a public IP (does www.whatsmyip.org match ipconfig/ifconfig)
Cable modems are not NAT routers (unless they are a combo unit) and thus require NO PORT FORWARDING.

Some small ISP's will NAT their subs, and may not forward ports/may be selective about forwarding. Some will also block common server ports, such as 25, 80, 443, etc

You need to give us the EXACT model number of your cable modem. As nweaver notes, most cable modems aren't NAT routers and no port forwarding is required. As near as I can tell, Arris doesn't make a combination Cable Modem-Router.

As u have mentioned , there is no configuration thro' which I can forward port 80. But if the ISP blocks 80, is ther any way to go round it so that I can convert my server into a webserver

call your ISP. Anything else is a violation of the TOS. You might find out they DON'T block port 80, and that you just need to fix a firewall or permissions/webserver config

Change the port that your web server serves on (default is usually 80).

But, as nweaver has stated, you may be violating the TOS. A majority of home internet connections forbid running server services.
