Port forwarding is useless

So I have a router built into my DSL modem that I use. It's a westell wirespeed.

I've used a few of these routers before and had no trouble with the port fowarding, but was recently upgraded to a new model.

Now when I use the port forwarding, the port is still dead.

Also if I choose the dynamic port forward option, rather than host, it means it opens the port for all computers connected to that router right? As opposed to just the host computer selected.
 
update the router firmware to the newest version, sometimes the default firmware is buggy and obsolete

also reboot (hard power cycle) the router... sometimes changes don't work unless you do that. buggy.

 
For MANY protocols simply forwarding a single port doesn't work. More info on the application, port and protocol please.
