port forwarding? gahh!

im connecting to westwood chat to play red alert. i have two pc's in my room both on lan, one is wireless other is connected with cat5. i was told by someone that I had to open ports or something? I dont really have any idea how to or what i need to do. Heres what the guy told me, can anyone please tell me what to do about this?

i would really apprieciate it, if you need anymore info, let me know....

warroot : I can tell you the ports
warroot : that you need to open
warroot : hang on
warroot : i think...
warroot : 8675, 5009 and 1214
warroot : tcp and udp
warroot : it's what we had to open hrtr
warroot : here
warroot : behind a firewall
warroot : the games uses specific ports
warroot : and if that is a firewall
warroot : you will have to allow this
warroot : also
warroot : it may only be one or two of those
warroot : i think one of them may be for something else
warroot : just have to try and see
warroot : see you later

connect to your router's config page and tell it to forward those ports to whichever computer you want to play the games on...

turn off DHCP onyour router. mine wont forward ports unless its off.

is this necessary? and how do i do that

net work newb here

what router model do you have? i have a linksys, and i have to turn off dhcp.. i think my old d-link router could have dhcp turned on, but am not sure. the dhcp should be in the basic setup menus. as for the port forwarding, just type in the ports that you need open where it says, and then specify the IP address of the machine from which you will be playing the game. you will have to specify IP addys for all machines on the router. another way to go is to put your machine in the DMZ, so it isnt behind the firewall.

By the way, the "Application-Triggered Port Forwarding" is NOT what you want. Look for something labeled as just plain old "port forwarding" or as "virtual server".

It would also be helpful to know what kind of router you have.

well first off at least tell us how you are networked, router, modem and switch type.

have a surfboard cable modem, microsoft wireless router mn-500

i have my cable modem going to the router then a cat5 going to my main gaming rig, then my other pc is connected with a wireless mn-510 usb adapter.
