Your ZoneAlarm firewall may be blocking the bittorent port. Try turning off ZoneAlarm completely to see if that's the cause.

Are you sure you're setting the forwarded port to go to the correct internal IP address?

I don't understand how I have 2 IP addresses? When I launch cmd/ipconfig/all I get an IPv4 IP starting with 198. When I go online to find my IP address, it starts with 98

Your Netgear router has two IP addresses:
A public address that's 98.xxx.xxx.xxx - that's for the the WAN (Internet) port on the router.
A private address that's 192.xxx.xxx.xxx - that's the LAN (local area network) side of the router.

Your PC has a private address that's on the same subnet as your router's private address (i.e. 192.xxx.xxx.xxx).

The only IP address that can be seen from the Internet is the public address of the router. The router blocks direct access to IP addresses inside your private network. Instead, the access is done by port forwarding, hiding your actual private network addresses.

The IPCONFIG /ALL command run on your PC sees the PC's address, which is a private address. The PC talks to the router (since both are on the same subnet. Then the router talks to the Internet, through it's Internet port.

quangdaika, you have 2 IP addresses. Your router gets a public IP address from your Internet provider. That's the one that starts with 98. Behind your router your computers get private IP addresses from the router. Those are the ones that start with 198.

You need to set your router to forward your bittorenet port to the private IP address of the computer that's going to use uTorrent.

So I used this website http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/ and found out that port 58000 was open. However, it was only open for a short while and then it closed again. So basically, it opened and closed by itself without me doing anything.

Also, I logged into my Netgear router's and set up port forwarding. I did this by clicking Add Customer Service. However, I don't see it on the Service Name list. When I try to do it again, it tell me that that port conflict with other service

BTW, the last number of the IPv4 address change. Does that affect anything?

quangdaika, if your private IP(starts 192.) address changes that's going to mess up your port forwarding. You need to set a IP address reservation in your router. That'll make sure the private address never changes.

IMHO ZoneAlarm is useless if you have a router. just use built in Windows firewall or non at all.

Most modern routers support Upnp (universial plug and play) and so does uTorrent. This basically automatically opens the port on the router. No other configuration needed.
Yeah Upnp itself might be a security risk. Some people recommend to disable it in Windows because else any Trojan could also easly use it.

How do I do that? I can log into the router's setting and there is a place for me to set static IP. However, it has my public IP address.

quangdaika, I think you need to look under LAN IP Setup under the Advanced heading in the main menu of your router settings. Go there and look for Address Reservation. Add a new reservation and give it your computers private(192..) address and its MAC address. You can find out both of those by doing an IPCONFIG /ALL at the Command Prompt. The MAC address is called Physical Address there. After you put in the reservation you can set your router to forward ports to that private IP address and the address won't change.
