Port Addressing: Main Disadvantage? Advantage?

I've been doing some searching and came up empty handed. I was wondering:

What's the positive & negative side towards port-addressing? I'm merely learning up a bit, so the huge main difference would be most appreciated. The smaller details we can leave out. Just a general query is all.
