Porsche promised it wouldn?t happen?that the nearly $60,000 Cayman S was as low as the German sports car maker would go in making a Boxster-based coupe.

But we?ve never bought that tale, reporting as early as March 2005 that Porsche was planning a less expensive, lower-powered non-S version of the Cayman. Porsche is now proving our suspicions were correct with the announcement of a ?more accessible? base Cayman, with a starting price of just under $50,000 (without freight charges).

The non-S Cayman is powered by a 2.7-liter, 245-hp, 201-lb-ft, flat six-cylinder engine. The standard transmission is a five-speed manual; optional gearboxes are a five-speed Tiptronic automatic and a six-speed manual (packaged with Porsche Active Suspension Management).

The 2007 Cayman goes on sale July 29, starting at $50,195 (including $795 freight). But here?s a thought: Porsche protestations to the contrary, we can only assume a turbocharged Cayman is just around the next corner.

A turbo Cayman that's around ~$60k would be fantastic, imo.

Otherwise, no thanks. The S is priced too awkwardly, imo, and it doesn't offer enough over the Boxster to justify the premium.

[edit]I realize a $60k turbo is probably not going to happen given the price of the S of course.[/edit]

Good times.

At this point, though, how does Porsche justify the price difference between the Cayman and the Boxster? I'm kind of confused about that.

I don't understand how Porsche gets away with selling a 245hp coupe for $50k. I mean, I think the car is gorgeous, but $50k? Cmon...

not enough balls. I realize people don't buy these for dragstrip numbers, but that's about as fast as V6 accords and camrys. Enough money for a C6.

You should watch the latest episode of Top Gear where a Lotus Exige rapes a Mustang GT

That's exactly what I was thinking. There's no way I'm buying a Cayman when I can get a fresh secondhand 911 for similar cash.

I just did a search on Autotrader and found 123 Porsche 911's for sale within 50 miles of me between model year 2002-2005. Most of the really nice low mileage later models were priced around $60k though.

993 air-cooled FTW. They look better than the 996's anyway

What does that have to do with anything?

That was a really crappy comparison though, the Exige costs twice as much as the GT.

And to OS, since when do V6 Accords/Camrys go from 0-60 in 5.8 seconds?

I don't see how that's relevant. The Exige S outgunned the Mustang to 60mph and beyond, and has a much better chassis. The C6, on the other hand, would utterly obliterate a Cayman to 60mph, and could stay close in the turns\braking.

I mean, I'd still rather have the Cayman, but the C6 is undeniably a better "performer."

A 6 second 0-60 isn't unusual for the modern high powered family sedan.

They don't. A $40k Lexus IS350 will do it in under that though. ;)

My point is, HP and engine size isn't the end all be all for cars (re: the not enough balls comment). Keep in Mind that the Cayman is under 2,900 lbs and is one of the finest handling cars anywhere.

60k for a brand new Cayman S that'll be worth 45k the moment you drive it off the lot or 70k for a few years old, low mileage 911 Turbo that'll be worth 40k after 5 years and 50,000 miles? Hmm...

I'm sure you were probably exaggerating, but Porsches don't drop 25% as soon as you drive them off the lot
