Sure, I know about gear boxes, but I'm sure in many sitautions I'd rather have my dad's 460LB/ft of torque leading to a 5.62:1 (iirc) 1st gear and then into the 2.42:1 transfer case ratio and 3.92 front/rear gears letting it idle at approximately 1MPH while putting down enough torque to let it climb up anything it's tires can keep a grip of.

Gearing doesn't come free. Sure, you can have a low 1st and a reasonable cruise, but then you need some wide spacing. And if you have to keep it at a high rev, near the peak to get the required torque, what happens when you need to go faster? Shift? At higher RPMs, an engine will also use more fuel. You're not going to get 20MPG when crawling over rocks at 1MPH on a 3 day trip that spans 30 miles (a la: Rubicon)

Porsche will reveal a lower-priced, lower-powered version of the Cayenne in Frankfurt. It'll be powered by a lightly tuned version of Volkswagen?s 3.2-litre V6 engine?as used in the Golf R32, among other models?at the Frankfurt auto show next month. The VW mill is the first ever V6 of any kind to be slotted in a Porsche factory product.
That is a WEAK motor for that huge vehicle:|

Stock 924's, 944's and 924S's will get outrun by minivans too. Acceleration is not the be-all and end-all.

Uh, your 914 and those cars are from different eras and they could outhandle the Cayenne even if you took their tires off.
I realize straight-line acceleration is not everything, but this vehicle should at least be able to pace its contemporaries.

Hmm. I think I'll take an FX35, spank your freaking porsche ass, and drive back to the bank on the way home to deposit my money left over 🙂

This is in the same vein as Mercedes releasing their tiny little sh*t box merc you can now buy. But, at least as I see it, when more people buy a porsche or mercedes just to say they own one, it's inevitably going to dumbdown the quality as people gain awareness of the sorts of cars P & M are starting to sell.

This is NOT the 1970's (ala the 914). This is a time and age where the SLOWEST Porsche is a 6.0 second 0-60 Porsche Boxster.

The Cayenne Turbo "ALMOST" makes sense b/c it's wickedly fast and handles damn good for an SUV. A V6 powered Cayenne is just a cry for help

And before you know it, everyone will be driving Merc's, Porsche's and BMW's. So much so, that future generations will then be intrigued and drool over those who don't own one - 'Wow! You drive a Nissan/Toyota/Honda?" 😀

If it's profitable, it makes sense. The Cayenne Turbo exists for no real reason other than to legitimise the Cayenne line. Just as the 914/6 was pretty much just there to legitimise the 914 line in its day. I don't feel that the V6 Cayenne harms Porsche's image in any way.

Would a V6 powered sport-ute hurt Ferrari's image? YES! Same goes for Porsche, a company known for it's sweet sports cars.

It sure would. In both cases - in fact with any high end car - you're paying a lot for the name and image. People buy a kia because they don't give a crap about image; they just want a good bang for buck. If a company selling expensive cars loses image people will stop paynig for it, because afterall you can't really believe tht a $200k ferrari is 10X the car of a $20k accord v6. Sure it's nice and fast but if ferrari had the same image as chevy people wouldn't buy them.

I would argue that it wouldn't. Not as long as the sportscar line remained "purebreds".

I seriously doubt that. It's just the "dumbing down" of Porsche.

I must be living in a different world than most of you people. Are you all actually saying you think people are trying to tow things with their Porsche SUVs? Are they really racing to the next stop light? People who actually tow shiat or go offroading aren't buying a Porsche in the first place. Where I live people will probably buy these for their kids.

Yeah, I know I sound like a smart a$$ but real SUV's have low and high gear for that reason.

So when are we going to see Honda's NSX engine in a truck? Because a 270HP V6 should be able to replace a 245HP Diesel I-6 right?
