Saw this today while walking around on Campus and snapped a quick pic with my iPhone:

Definitely a Boxster and not a Cayman. It also looks very different from the hardtops people usually put on convertibles like the Boxster, Miata, etc. This car's top was very well integrated with the body (roof did not look removable), and it had rear quarter windows which are not present on a removable hardtop.

I've never heard of a Boxster coupe before, though. Is this a limited production special?

Bolt-on hardtop, maybe?

It definitely doesn't look like a bolt-on removable hardtop. I didn't see any seams around where the roof attaches to the body...and this car also had rear quarter windows, which are absent on Boxster hardtops.

This car looked like a factory-built Boxster coupe...but I'm not aware of Porsche ever making any of those.

Kind of defeats the point of a Boxster IMO.

Otherwise, might as well get a Cayman or 911.

Why? It's removal and the car can be back to factory in a matter of minutes.

have you ever tried removing a hard top, typically you need a hoist and a stand.

Personally I have a newer Boxster (987) and I think this doesn't look great - but now they have the Cayman.

Removable hard tops are quite common. See them all the time on 90's 3-series, 996's and Boxsters.

They also made them for a special edition Mustang Cobra in I think '94, The 2000's Ford Thunderbird had em, and of course there are the Miata's and Benz SL's.

Usually you can hardtops off by hand but you need multiple people to lift it off the car. The hoists are nice because then you can do it all by yourself.

I've helped a friend remove and fit a hard top before. Its reasonably heavy and cumbersome, but it can be done with two people.
