Porsche 924's

thinking about trying to find one as a toy car, wrench car for around 1500-2000 dollars. summer only.

winter would be my saab.

anyone have experience?

fyi: 2800lbs, ~200 hp, front engine, RWD.

ive read up a lil know what to look for, but i gotta look for them now if i can find one.

would be fun

but anyone here know of other sites?
i read the 944 FAQ, and am now over on pelican parts, and rennlist, but wondering what you guys on here feel.

would it be a fine investment? i know paying someone to work on them is costly, but i can do most of my own work.

It depends on the year. I wouldn't want one of the earlier ones, but the later ones were basically a 944 that didn't look as good.

I had a 944 for a while; I liked it well enough, but you definitely don't want that to be your only car if you ever have to drive in the snow.

It'll require a lot of work in terms of maintenence/upkeep from what I hear

from what i read, it will in the timing belt tensioning, or else major engine work will happen when the timing chain/belt snaps and vavles, pistons go clanking together.

however it seems the engine, if properly maintained will be bullet proof. and the body wont rust due to being galvanized steel. a few spots where leaks may occur, but only things that maintnence would prevent.

i just need to figure out a bit more on it.

trygve, i own a Saab 9-5 that would be my winter car.

also, did you use this car to workout? i mean, did you bench press the car? it seems to be light enough for you to do so... 😀

but yes, i would look later models when the 924 was a 944 with different body panels

That's right--I remembered you'd mentioned the winter car right after I'd hit the reply button.

Never did lift the Porsche myself; that would have made a good pic, though.

I did spend some time driving it around while wearing a suit of armor, but that's another story. I thought it was amusing, nonetheless.

I also made an assortment of removable magnetic bumper stickers; I figured at least having "My other car is also a Porsche" was necessary. 🙂

looks as if a 924 from 87 year is around 3K or so, give or take.

owner says all records, and it has 150k miles on it, which ive heard, more mileage typically means better maintnence.

however its 221 miles from my house (4 hours give or take).

asking price is 3550. of course im no where near home.

but yea, i have a winter car/nice car, but im a kid, i think this would just be a pure fun car, wrench/learn car. have my dad teach me some more things about cars wth this car because its sorta cheap/beater type, ALMOST beater price range.

150K isn't that bad. Parts can cost a bit extra, but if memory serves, it's a lot easier to get around under the hood than a whole lot of other cars.

Those clutches are a bitch to replace, and pricey.

Fun track cars. Probably that and the 944 are the cheapest porsches next to the boxster.

If you want less headaches and daily driving, I suggest the E30 M3

ive read the clutch isnt THAT hard, but difficult enough, i wouldnt mind doing it.

i have a daily driver, Saab 9-5 is my daily, its a nice car.

not that i know anything about the car specifically, but i'd say go for it, and post pics 🙂 😛

Aircooled VW all the way. Simple to learn and work on, rear engine RWD, and even lighter. Less HP, until you start hot-rodding the engine 😀

dude the 924 had a van engine in it.....a van engine, did you not see the top gear where they had to buy porsches for £1500? man it was shambolic.

If only ACVWs were made of galvanized steel 🙁

I love Porsche, but not particularly fond of any of the front engine ones. you'll find alot of audi parts on some model/years. i think the entire tranny is audi on one year.

I personally would not do it (but I have a 76 bus sitting in the back yard, so who am I to say 🙂 ).

You mentioned it would be a "toy" car, so I'm sure it'll be fun and there seems to be alot of support online, so as a hobby, might as well....

I used to have a 914 back in the day. that was a fun poor-man's porsche.

You do have a point there. There's always fiberglass 😛

That's what I prefer. I want to build a rail buggy or an old-school fiberglass dune buggy with a 2 liter bus engine converted to upright. 🙂

Good point, but you wouldn't get anywhere near an M3 for $3500.

OP, that's a mediocre deal at best. Too many miles, least desirable bodystyle, too many miles. You can get a pretty clean 944 for that - or an older BMW or Z.

I own and love an 87 944s and I know it's been said before, but I will say it again; parts are very, very expensive for these cars, and they are not particularly easy to work on yourself. Actually they're a royal pain in the ass to work on - they seem to have been designed and built by contortionist dwarves who have an extra wrist grafted 2" inboard of their original ones.

But they're wonderful cars to drive fast, and the turbo 944s are just plain awesome.

You know, everybody says that, but why is that bad? The tranny is plenty strong. The Audi parts aren't the ones that break - they're mostly made by Bosch anyway, just like the Porsche parts.

Actually my 76 bus fuel injection has audi logo's all over it. I'm not knocking it, just bringing it up. I love Bosch parts.

the one thing i HAVE heard however, is to look for one WITH mileage, because with mileage comes routine maintnence, and means it hasnt just SAT. plus that owner has all of the records.

i never said id pay what hes asking... but i bet i could get him down to 2500.

however the turbo variants are expensive.

im not looking for something expensive. if i do that, ill get a cheap 924, and throw a v6 chevy into it, or something else like that.
