Cut the fat

It seems this list was an effort put together after the costs of Katrina were put out there for public information. I know some sites and people have focused on Government pork for years but not quite on this level and from the looks of it - not with this much support.

Check out the list 'o pork and see if your state is on the list. If so - contact your Goverment representatives and tell them to cut the pork. If you know of Federal pork in your state that is not listed - send these guys the information and they'll add it to the list.

IMO, not only will this effort help with the current disaster spending issue, but will also help trim some of that wildly overgrown Federal budget we have. I see we have alot of talk from people here about "fiscal" responsibility - lets see if those same people step up to the plate when it might be their state's pork being tagged.

I've written my Senators and Reps no less than 20 times this year begging for fiscal conservatism. I'll take a look and send another few (I've sent 2 to each (6 total) this week).

Edit: It's hard to believe that there is only 24 Billion in identified pork in the federal government. That's got to be a crock!

heh it is upto 28 billion now ;)

Clearly there has to be more. I would be willing to be they can cut 10% which is what, about 150 billion without breaking a sweat?

Realistically 15-20% can probably be cut.

The budget is 2.6 trillion. 10% would be 260 Billion! :Q

Why, where would we be without such obviously necessary projects as these?

*$320,000 for a study on road runoff in Michigan (plenty of taxpayer money running off)
*$2,000,000 for a bike trail and walkway at the Philadelphia Zoo (who goes biking at a zoo?)
*$300,000 for 'interpretive signage' and trails in Pittsburgh urban park land (I interpret this as pork)
*$22,796,800 for landscaping along freeways and interchanges in Houston, Texas (because pretty landscaping is the reason you drive on the roads in the first place, right?)
*$750,000 for assorted 'improvements' at a horse trail in Virginia (because obviously, horse trails are high-maintenance)
*$8,200,000 for an all-inclusive religious (Christians, jews, etc, even wiccans) chapel in Washington
*$25,000,000 in Sheboygan County, Wisconsin, for bike trails (holy frijoles, how many bikes trails do you need?!)
*$3,000,000 for a documentary explaining infrastructure advancements in Alaska
*$37,000,000 for a road for a Wal-Mart in Arkansas

Isn't it just wonderful how our elected officials are so generous (when it comes to spending other peoples' money)?

Take that $25,000,000 and keep some poor folks on dialysis or something.

Missouri - 9th district
($ 25,000,000 in total pork)
Representative:
Hulshof, Kenny C. (R)

Senators:
Christopher S. Bond (R)
James Talent (R)

?Non-motorized public transportation? pilot program in Columbia, Missouri. $ 25,000,000 Added by:
The Heritage Foundation
According to the Columbia Daily Tribune, ?Columbia is guaranteed $25 million in federal funds to build bicycle and pedestrian trails, but when that money will show up, how it will be used and how it will be distributed remains a mystery to city officials,? as there are ?no specific plans for the money.? Columbia was identified as one place where the program ?could work? by Washington, D.C., advocacy group Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, and the money was procured by Sen. Kit Bond (R), chairman of the Senate Environment Committee?s Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee

I think we should take bush and his cabnet along with the stupid judges we have to keep paying for life... And 90% of congress ... Outsource those jobs to the lowest bidder...

We should also stop giving past presidents and any other rich congressman/woman a paycheck after they retire. They are already rich... Why do we need to keep supporting them and wasting all this money???

That should cut some of the pork off the bone. But I bet ol' bush in his plush 747 / limo's / body gurds etc...etc.... WASTE will not go for it. Hmmm, I wonder why???

Bridges in Alaska.

Don Young will probably pounce on that money from Montana if Republicans can't get spending under control.

Anyone find it strange that considering Republicans are in power (and have been for a while) that there is still this much pork out there? I mean I thought they were supposed to be Fiscal conservatives.

Humm...Connecticut has 14,450,000 total pork (according to this website) and two Democratic senators, and North Carolina has two Republican senators and: 2,832,331,647 in total pork (according to this website). Interesting...

Not in the last half century they haven't been. Look at the historical record - deficit spending, spending as % of GDP, national debt, etc. They all point to republicans as being the party of increased spending over the last 50 or so years.

In my economics classes we covered a lot of pork examples. At that time (5 years ago but I doubt the numbers changed much in the last few years), the pork which was recorded was between 2:1 and 3:1 with republicans to democrats. Thus, republicans spend double to triple the amount democrats spent on pork each year.

Yes, there are some bad democrats when it comes to pork. But overall, you are completely wrong in assuming that republicans don't create pork.

Hey, let's play a game of who is worse

ALL Pork is bad and needs to be removed no matter what size of pork it is. Go ahead and play your little partisan games if you must though.

Disgusting

You have to admit there is probably 260 billion in pork within our budget that should clearly go.

Ironically if they cut that much pork out we would be within a stones throw of a balanced budget.

The problem is spending as usual.

There arent many fiscal conservatives left in congress on either aisle.

Since I really hate debt and spending, I do think it's relevant as to who spends "MY" money and how much it is wasted. Sure, all waste is bad, but the Democrats have been known as the tax and spend party for years. Apparantely, they don't hold a candle to the GOP in spending, which is the big problem in this country's federal government - spending!

Pork isn't the only place where "MY" money is spent wastefully and in a fiscal irresponsible way. Entitlements and other programs are mightily wastefull uses of resources so while you or others might only want to play the pork blame game - it leaves out more than it includes. So it's nothing more than a little partisan game and doesn't come close to giving the full picture of wasteful spending.

I would support an immediate 10% across the board cut to ALL expenditures(bar NONE) - do you?

What kind of diversion tactic is this? The socalled consservatives controll the executive and both houses of the legislature. All you are doing is attempting to obscure that fact.

Bush can't spell "veto", much less use it in a sentence. Too bad, you can't even recognize the problem.

No, the so-called Republicans control the executive and both houses of the legislature. Believe it or not - I know, this is shocking - being a Republican does not automatically mean that you're a conservative. Zell Miller is a Democrat, but he's quite the conservative. Arlen Specter, John McCain and George Dubya, despite having an 'R' next to their name, are not conservatives in any sense of the word. When Bush gave his speech promising all sorts of aid and money to the relief effort for Katrina's aftermath, it was like having a flashback to LBJ and the Great Society.

If you haven't taken an honest look at history, by the way, the Great Society and the war on poverty ended up being about as successful in the long run as the New Deal's Social Security program. And in case I need to further elaborate for those who still get their news from the 'mainstream' media outlets, Welfare and Social Security are accomplishing absolutely nothing and tanking badly overall because socialist government spending programs don't work.

George Bush, the Republicans, AND the Democrats all intend to do absolutely nothing to cut the pork from spending. Get over it, those of you in both parties, and stop resorting to partison rhetoric to try and puff up your particular political party because they're both at fault.

So-called conservatives would trim the pork and reduce spending. So-called conservatives would dramatically roll back the government's spending and costs so that the so-called conservatives could then give tax cuts since money wouldn't need to be raked in to support the excess spending. So-called conservatives would then watch the economy flourish because people would be able to keep a lot more of their money.
