10-26-2003 Battle Brews in South Over Highways

A thousand years ago, in what is now Georgia, Indian tribes built two mounds that have become known as the pyramids of the Southeast. A government proposal could put a highway between the landmarks, and federal road and bridge projects could encroach upon other historic sites.

"Many of these projects, before they even get off the drawing board, get squelched if they would harm a historic property," Merritt said. "It works as such an effective deterrent."

Too much so, contends Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga. For years, he has tried to broker a deal between the Georgia Department of Transportation and defenders of Ocmulgee Old Fields near Macon, Ga.

State and city officials want the proposed 215-mile Fall Line Freeway to run through the wetlands along the Ocmulgee River between the 1,000-year-old Great Temple Mound and Lamar Mound, both built by Indian tribes.

"It's been a nightmare to try to get this particular project completed," said Chambliss. "I don't mind folks having the opportunity to object and do it the right way, but the process is extremely cumbersome."

There is absolutely no need for this highway to cut through the Histric Indian Mounds. Already have Interstate 16 nearby which is extremely underused. This is 110% Pork barrel project to line the pockets of good ol boys down there.

I'm sorry I voted for this Republican Senator Saxby Chambliss just as sorry as voting for the first Republican Governor Sonny Purdue. Unfortunately the alternative was to leave the Democrats "King Roy Barnes" and Max Cleland in Office, both which attacked a lot of people including Teachers and myself. Now we have people that attack the Land and resources for profit at the expense of generations down the road.
