What type of speakers? Subwoofer, center, the whole 7.2 setup, or just mains...?

BOSE... better sound through marketing.

Dood, you can't really take speaker suggestions too seriously. You MUST get your dad to the store and LISTEN to them. Each brand/style/size/ect will sound different, you have to find the sound profile your dad likes. Have him bring one of his fav music sources and play it at the store. Granted, you're looking for a movie set up, but if he doesn't like the way his music sounds on it, he's probably not gonna like the way movies sound on them either.

You need a receiver too, right?

If not, AV123 X-series would be close to your pricerange.

I wrote up a crappy general audio thread if you want to take a look at it.

We could just list off some good options for you, but sound is a personal thing so it might not be the best option for him.

As was said already, you don't need to necessarily get a whole 5.1 system right away, but if you think he doesn't want to put any more money into it in the future, then I guess full 5.1 would be the way to go right away.

Does he have anything that might be reusabe (like speakers to use as surrounds or something?)

How much time / effort does he want to put into this? Do you think he would be interested in going out and doing a demo of some differnt stuff, or is this more like a "make sure I don't get ripped off, son" sort of thing?

He could potentially try several options and figure out which one is best for him, or you could just pick out something good for the price and hope he likes it.

Would he be willing to go used? I recently got a system for my own parents for $750 that would have been closer to $2k if everything was new.
