Poppy seeds pulled from the shelf at local grocery...

My wife was shopping in the spice section of a local grocery store today. The spot for the poppy seeds was empty, replaced by a sign stating "due to a recent rise in theft, poppy seeds can be purchased from the Customer Service counter"

WTF?

Are all the meth labs in Iowa converting over to Heroin?

According to Wikipedia (so take a few grains of salt there) seeds contain 58.4 to 62.2 µg/g of morphine.

That's a very poor analogy. Heroin can be produced from poppy seeds, whereas Nestle Chocolate contains no cocaine whatsoever. Cocaine comes from the coca plant, not cocoa, which comes from the cocao Tree.

Spices are EXPENSIVE, though...wouldn't it be cheaper to actually buy heroin than to buy enough poppy seeds to get you high?

when i was in the air force a guy in my squadron got busted on a randum drug test. he tested postive for heroin. he swore up and down he did not do drugs and how some way his hot test was traced back to some food that had a lot of poppy seed in it.

I thought it was just another BS rumor until our CO briefed us on it and to stay away from poppy seeds.

Doubt it, but also easier to get the poppy seeds than the actual drug itself?

I think those people are stupid, anyone who does drugs is lacking in the common sense department IMO... but then common sense these days seems awfully rare.

True. I knew a guy who failed a drug test and traced it to food with poppy seeds his mom sent him.
