Poppy Seeds and Drug Tests

I digested a poppy seed bagel 24 hours before a drug test...of all the dumb things. I told the person who took the drug test that I may of ate poppy seeds as well.

I heard a lot of stories in the 90's about how people took companys to court and winning lawsuits after losing their jobs from poppy seed induced drug tests. I mean, I hope the labs are smart enough to know if the sample shows only a little opium in the blood that it does not mean im a heroin addict.
 
Why did you tell him you may have eaten one? Should've just been like, "Yo! I ate a poppy seed bagel, mofvcka..."
 
Now you sound like an Heroin addict because you had to go and bring that up. You would have been better to not say anything at all and realize that the test will not think that you have been doing heroin.

btw I've heard about this also, I remeber my Dr gave me a piece of paper before I had to get blood drawn telling me to specifically NOT eat anything with poppy seeds prior to the test. Over cautious? Maybe.

This is actually true...Myth Busters on Discovery Channel did a test on this and they did test positive after ingesting poppy seed bread and cake.
 
Well if worse comes to worse, with my back ground check and history of negative drug tests, they'll just ask for a follow up to eliminate the false-positive.

 
Eh. I don't think I should be worried. All depends on the lab. Some can figure out the false positives and some dispute it. Mostly because it's very expensive to have a follow up.

"Harold Crossley, a nationally known chemical dependency expert, said you would have to eat 100 poppy seed bagels to score a positive on a drug test. When taken into account that very few poppy seeds are sprinkled on bagels, you can see that poppy seeds from a hundred poppy seed bagels will easily fill a single large pastry."

Well lets hope he's right.
