Okay so I just read about Gordon Ramsey loving these things when he cheats on his wife, and then a few weeks ago the guys on Always Sunny couldn't get enough of them either...

How did I make it through ~5 years of college without hearing about this recreational drug???

It's fairly niche - you'd know it if you were part of the rave scene. Sniffing it on top of ecstacy + speed etc takes you to another place, enhancing dancing and sex and pretty much anything else you can do at a rave bar talking. Nitrous oxide also works.

You smell it and it makes your head throb... i dunno id rather have a beer or something but this junkie i know seems to enjoy emm. Didnt do it for me.

i thought "whippets" came from the nitrous cartridges used to make whipped goods... the product was called "whip-it".
