Well.. he is a man after all... plus probably his staff is willing to try anything in order to keep him alive.
I am not religious in any way... but this pope made really incredible things during his life. I think the world is going to miss him a lot in future. I don't think the next one could be quite as influential as he has been during his time.
yeah, speaking against the use of condoms in africa for example , helping millions of people die of aids. could someone hand me a nobel price please?
the only bad thing about this guy finally kicking the bucket is that there will be another one after him.[/quote]
He never said you should have unprotected casual sex. He said you should unprotected sex with your lifetime partenr only, otherwise abstain. Of course, not beeing religious, I don't agree at all. This is a moral issue, and I wouldn't suppose the pope to promote lust and reckless fun.
But having worked quite a long time in many african countries including Botswana, where the AIDS infected reach almost 50% of the population, I can tell you that the pope opinion about this is one of the least important things for the problem.
A- Most of them are not catholics, and wouldn care about what the pope said.
B- A tiny percentage of the population has access to a television set.
C- Even if they wanted to use condoms... they have simply no access to them. Most of the people never saw a condom, and when the UN people gave them some for free the reaction was usually an understandable dislike for the damn thing.
D- Even if they had a condom shop near home (and they don't) they wouldn't spend those money... also because they would need tons of them. What a lot of people don't understand is that in austral-african countries the people have A LOT of sex. And I mean A LOT. The average zambian man probably have more sex in a month than the avarage american in 10 years. They have a lot of free time... their future is VERY uncertain, so they just do today what they want to do...
E- They don't think they have AIDS... most of the people think AIDS is a white-men thing.
Of course there are educated africans, living in urban areas, who DO have culture about AIDS and understand the magnitude of the problem, but they are quite few, expecially in the poor countries like Angola, Zaire, Zambia etc etc.
But, as I said, I agree with you that I don't support his view on what a correct sexual life is. Actually I think that religion should stay away from things like sexual behaviour. Humans had sex much before they had a God.
When I was writing about this pope deeds I meant the role he played in causing the collapse of the communism in eastern europe countries.. without shooting a single bullet... and the efforts he was making in these last years in order to reconciliate the biggest world religions.
