the stupid thing that what the muslims did, was prove the pope's point. it was the words of some medieval emperor and he did apologize. so what do the muslims do? prove his point.

Agree that some Muslims aren't doing their cause any good, nor have for some time. But the Pope should have been smarter and forseen that, and at least done a better job of stopping it dead at this point.

Fanning the flames of muslim rage and hatred don't do the moderates any good -- they do the radicals a lot of good though.

It's a sad world when a bunch of thugs make people sacred to tell the truth.

We need more, not less people telling it how it is.

Appeasement has never, and will never work.

This is one of the outstanding questions.

I'm willing to let it slide as academic stupidity. He apparently assumed that thousands of people are going to find and read good translations in very foreign languages, and absorb the complex details and numerous cultural contextual elements implicitly, and that "they're not really my words/thoughts" would be a sufficient excuse in the end.

I've read the English version a couple of times so far (it's not an easy read) and I disagree with much that's written there, and the approach itself.

I think the Pope was patting himself and his peers on their back in this discourse, and the results speak for themselves. If his real intent was a genuine dialog, which I think it was in part at least, then I think he will have to do a much better job. Unfortunately, I don't believe at this time that he's actually capable of doing this, and so think he could be better off not even trying and trying to make simple peace where possible instead.

Edit: Included quote and fixed typo.

Apprently millons of muslims do.

I thought this pope and the muslims would get along.

I mean they both don't mind the extermination of the Jews.... isn't that a common ground they can build a strong relationship off of?

Why would you say something like that about the Pope? Do you have any evidence of this?

Um... he lived in Nazi Germany during WWII and won't speak about his time there.

He was a child, forced into the Hitler Youth and drafted into the military. He deserted in 1945. I wouldn't speak of it either.

BTW, he, and his family vocally opposed the Nazis and were persecuted for it.

To call him a Nazi or claim he wants the extermination of Jews is absurd and slander.

No, no, you guys don't understand. Muslim can call all Westerners and rest of infidels evil, but we can't do the same. You see, because Islam is not a country (even tho most of arab countries are 99% muslim) and its a "greater" entity therefore if you say anything remotely close to bad about Islam you better prepare for war

In 1938 the Hitler Youth became compulsory. Membership was required by law.

Muslims (no offense to any here, I know Muslims, and they're great people), mainly the radical ones, are offended WAY to easily. The Pope made a scholary citation of a medieval document, and they go off a PROVE that he was right....

They sure do.

Look at the way they reacted to the cartoons.

Now look at how they reacted to 9/11...

Many reacted to 9/11 by cheering in the streets. Not just radicals, but women, children...

Thats Something along the lines me saying

The black man as a whole is, IMO, worthless. The world would be a better place without them.

No it's not. We are able to choose our religious beliefs, and our religious beliefs absolutely have an effect on our behavior. Religion and race are two entirely different things, and I agree with Astaroth on this one.

Maybe not as much of a choice in Mid-east countries, where in som places Islam is 99.9% population, and there is a fear of death if you choose to leave Islam or convert (and most of people are "born" into Islam)
