"I believe that the church not only should apologize to the person who is gay whom it has offended," he added, "but has to apologize to the poor, to exploited women, to children exploited for labor; it has to ask forgiveness for having blessed many weapons."

The Pope's comments came in response to a question about a German Cardinal who said the Catholic Church should apologize for being "very negative" about gays. The Pope was also asked, by the same journalist, whether Christians bear some blame for hatred toward the LGBT community, as horrifically demonstrated in the Orlando massacre at a gay night club that killed 49 people on June 12. Repeating the teaching of the Catechism of the Catholic Church about respecting and not discriminating against gays, Pope Francis said that one could condemn certain behavior.
"One can condemn, but not for theological reasons, but for reasons of political behavior...Certain manifestations are a bit too offensive for others, no?
"But these are things that have nothing to do with the problem. The problem is a person that has a condition, that has good will and who seeks God, who are we to judge? And we must accompany them well."

Good. This is long overdue. Many Catholics have accepted that any ostracization of homosexuals goes against their core beliefs about how you treat others, and would go a step further to say that the doctrinal wording in the catechism from the JPII era also needs to be changed to reflect that. Of course, the reactionaries at the USCCB have been strangely silent on the issue...

Apologizing for abuse is certainly called for.

Apologizing for Catholic doctrine is not.

You do realize that while Catholics are Christians, Christian =/= Catholic right? The Pope is the head of the Catholic church, not the leader of all Christians.

I myself am Catholic and have no disagreement with the Pope's comments, but I would prefer he stop pushing into politics. He appears to be a good man with his heart in the right place, but much too political for my taste.

Is that bashing? Of course the Bible also teaches us not to judge others, and never to hate the sinner instead of the sin. Many Christians conveniently forget those. The Pope's message is a good one, but I don't feel I have anything specific to apologize to any group for, other than being a sinner in general and often a lousy human being.

Not a Catholic myself, but this is 100 percent true. Catholic doctrine does not call for the abuse and mistreatment of gays, but in practice, they did abuse and mistreat gays historically.

Francis is absolutely correct for apologizing. That does NOT mean he approves of homosexuality, or condones it.

Lets also be honest about this: gays nowadays think anyone that disagrees with them are "discriminatory". They've even called for the jobs of people who publicly disagree with gay marriage. Yes, advocate ruining my life and taking my livelihood because I dare think for myself and form my own opinion.
