This could be the most important papal election in a long time. The church's has a lot of influence in Latin America and Africa, a non traditional pope would go a long way in keeping that influence.

Well it won't be a European or North American most likely since the church is shrinking there.

Good for him. I guess he doesn't want to go out a veggie and die in office like most other popes.

He is retiring at the end of this month. I hope the catholic church nominates someone less ethically and morally compromised this time.

Any chance that the next pope would properly deal with the sex abuse scandal? Openly deal with it and solve it?

That would require admitting there is a problem... and religious organizations rarely, if ever, do that when it involves themselves.

Seems to me that admitting the problem and then not solving it might be bad press but if they can actually solve it that would be a very positive thing. How can they expect to grow as a church when parents must be concerned for their children and people are second guessing even the innocent members of the clergy?

Not going to happen.

I'm not convinced that is a concern of theirs.

How was he "ethically and morally compromised" ?

Oh god don't ask that. This thread will go down in flames if we get into that.

Here have this instead:

no its not going to happen. the church has been unethical in dealing with the kids they mollested. From claiming bankruptcy (local church where it happened) to refusing to open books and such to investigations.

I do think that growing the church is a vital concern. without new people coming in and adding to t he coffers the church is well worthless. the pop needs a new gold scepter you know..

is there something to "solve," other than going through old coverups? I can't recall hearing about any new/contemporary cases, unless I just missed it.

Has that ever hurt anyone's career in the RCC before?

I lived in Boston when a big scandal erupted surrounding Bernard Cardinal Law. As I recall, he was clearly and directly implicated and quit his position -- and then a year later got a cushy appointment at the Vatican.

Didn't know this but apparently he spent time in the Hitler Youth (mandatory) and then served in the military setting up anti-tank traps in Hungary while Jews were herded into a nearby death camp.

Classy

Now the almighty and holy Catholic church can hold a vote... I mean... god can select a new divine messenger to lead the members of his flock.

He was a child and was conscripted. I don't blame him for any of that, and anyway there is no need. He proved to be a horrible person anyway.

how many 13 year-olds do you know who'd sooner face death than do what the government is forcing them to?

there's loads to criticize him for without trying to allege that he's a secret Nazi supporter.

He had to serve. I wrote that up above.

I'd like to think that I would be a better person than him.

You'll have to excuse me but I have friends and family who lived through all this (and some who didn't). People who saw their families killed in front of them. People who fled, hid in the mountains, were slaves, were in concentration camps, starved, etc.

This man is the Pope. Of all people shouldn't the Pope have better moral character than to spend years serving the Nazi war machine?
