My Maxtor hdd still works but now makes a strange popping sound when accessed. The "cracking sound" is much louder. What could it be? Any idea? Btw Maxtor 10G 5400 Rpm. Thanks

ack! sounds like the hard drive is going bad
back up data ASAP and then run some diagnostic tools on it. You'll have to RMA it to Maxtor and get it replaced.

That "POP" is actually the click of death beginning
Run Maxtor's Diagnostic utility on it, get the error code, and then get a RMA

First: Back up your hard drive.
Second: Add butter and a pinch of salt. ;)

That ping sound is probably your head assembly going past its normal boundaries and Pinging off the wall of the assembly or the spindle. Have had several drives in the past do that. You dont have a whole lot of time left before you start getting scambled files and then the directory structure dies - get my drift. If your lucky they wont have anymore 10Gb's left and will have to give you a 20 or something. hehe Wishful thinking.
