Pop your X2's lid?

Why would you even risk it? I can see someone doing this on their beat up sempron, but not a brand new x2.

Presuming this is a real effect for some people, wouldn't you get similar results by somehow increasing the pressure from the HS to push the IHS better against the cores. I would tend to think the folks that had weak OC's before and reasonable ones after probably would have also benefitted from more simply (?) having the HS push down harder on the lid.

I've heard of this before however I would never do it not with a $1000 processor for sure!

Did you guys read through the rest of the post? One guy had an Athlon64 3200+ (Barton i think) that he actually sanded! the core after removing the IHS & IT STILL WORKED! (pg2)

On the third page it was interesting to see a new Venice core with after the IHS was removed its really small.

I really don't think I am going to risk that either. I have a crappy core 0 that won't go past 220 stable, and 225 I think still is, after that though...it fails prime. Would be interesting though if it was a safe thing to do.

Oh well...guess I might have to try water cooling next...

hey... this is AT, not xtremesystems...

this forum is about people trying to get the best value for their money...

you think people here would even think about squeezing every bit of performance out of a $600+ processor?

from what i've been reading, removing the lid helps temps anywhere from 5 to 10C's. The contact between the lid and core isn't always great so removing the lid can help with temp issues... and people have gain some overclock...

but as i said.. this is AT... enough said

major problem is most heatsinks arent meant to work on a64's without a heatspreader so they dont make good contact only a couple of thermalright ones are built for it, and it is to easy to crush the core. Their are benefits but not worht it imo.

its worth it if you are trying to squeeze every bit of performance out of the cpu.

...also stable, safe, quiet unlike them.

Shimmishim...

Not trying to start a flame war here, but sorry to make you aggrivated! This is a forum for knowledge and information sharing. Last I checked this was also the correct forum for overclocking...and since this is considered an overclocking mod...I thought I would bring it to peoples attention and get some feed back to see what people thought about it and if anyone here tried it. Since this is a FREE mod you can do to help your overclock, I believe it qualifies for your value statement!

So with that being said...anyone here actually try this and if so...what do you think about it, how did it work out for you?

To get another 100mhz, if you don't know what you're doing, you risk:
1. Crushing or chipping your core
2. Frying your core b/c you weren't able to get your hsf to get a good contact with the core
3. Being out of $1000

I'd rather spend the money to get a water or better cooling set-up and get better results than trying this mod.

That's what I was thinking...honestly I'd almost be too afraid to do this...but thought I would link it over here for those that don't know about it on OCF...

I'd rather sink it into better cooling myself...but some people want to break the all out speed barrier...so this would give them a shot...plus it's free for those willing to try

who said i was aggravated?

i was just stating a fact.

this is AT.

people here buy cpu's for value, not for extreme modding to gain like 50 to 100 mhz.

hence you will also notice why everyone is saying... "it's too risky"

here is a nice thread at xtreme about people that have been doing it for a while now... there's some discussion about popping it off the X2 in the last few pages...

What is it the stuff that bonds the core to the IHS?. Not the surround...but the stuff in the middle? Is it special...can you use AS5? Sorry for the noob question...but I just don't know what it is

if you're concerned about crushing the core... what you can do is remove the IHS, clean off the gunk and then place the IHS back on top of the core with AS 5 or some better thermal paste applied.

this thread has a discussion about that at the end of the post

its just some gunk that semi holds the IHS to the core but you can carefully (very carefully) remove it by getting a very sharp razorblade between the core and IHS and working your way around the core carefully...

and yes, after you've removed it... you can use AS5.
