'Pop videos now are like soft porn'

What does she think of the new generation of women in pop? 'There are some bright women,' she says, 'but the consensus is that you whore it. That's what it looks like to me. You have to become a sex object. I'm all for erotica, I love it, but the values that I see on pop videos are like soft porn.'

It is 30 years since she dropped out of a classical degree course at the Royal Academy of Music and swapped the flute for a career as a rock singer. But she says: 'I despair of the women I see in music. I wouldn't even call it shallow - the values are ignorant, materialistic. I don't think we've gone forwards at all. In fact, I think we've gone backwards.'

While I completely agree with her, I don't think there's anything anyone can do about it anymore :(

I remember when I used to be able to watch MTV and see interesting music videos (I like to see any of these half-assed pop crackheads come up with anything half as good as MJ's "Thriller" or "Smooth Criminal"). Now all they have is reality TV bullsh!t.

I totally agree as well. Sad statement about what hollywood and others are trying to push as 'morality' (more like the lack thereof) on our already moral-less culture. Man, I wish we still had some semblance of values and morals here. It'd certainly go a long ways to making us a better and more effective force in making our world a better place to live, instead of the way it is now, where any honest effort is seen as hypocrisy by those we try and help b/c our own culture is so degraded morally.

I remember some of the uproar when a new Madonna video would come out (could only play it at night, etc)...now those videos don't even get a 2nd glance...

I'm not sure I buy the whole argument that movies, TV shows, music videos, computer games, etc, are responsible for our society's lack of morals. Hell, I'm not sure I agree that we HAVE a lack of morals. Just look at the history of this country last century...I'd say we've come a long way.

Of course I guess people view morality differently, every time someone is bemoaning the "lack of morals" now, the next words out of their mouth have something to do with teenagers having sex. I'd rather have that than have us not allowing women to vote or lynching black people...wouldn't you?

they're not responsible for it, they're a symptom of it, but those who MAKE those things are also pushing society into more and more social decay in other ways as well. but as for entertainment, that's a symptom of the lack of morality.

I remember in the early 90's when MTV had mainly music videos and the only TV shows they had were at night and were shows like Beavis and Butthead (which also happened to play music videos). Now when you DO get a music video on MTV, which rarely happens, its usually whoever is the flavor of the week, whether it be 50 cent, Eminem, or some pop crap.

"I want my MTV" has turned into "Where's my MTV?!?" :(

There is an underground scene where the music is all that matters, where marketing plays no importance, and independant reviews and word of mouth are the only forms of advertisement. I recommend looking it up. Overplayed teeniebopper pop stuff has always sucked. It's just worked it's way into the mainstream.

Yeah. Instead of being lynched, now it's common for black girls to have several kids before they're 20 and live their lives in poverty and crime ridden neighborhoods. I'm glad society has come so far...
