Pop-ups: why do they show up? Who is doing it?

Yes, I know it's another pop-up's thread, but this isn't a complaint since I know that the policy here at AT is against them. This is simply an honest question that I haven't seen answered in any of the other threads. Why do pop-ups show up on the site every couple of months? Who is doing it? Is Anandtech getting hacked? Or is it that the company who does the ads for the site playing around?

Mods: I see that you are locking all the pop-up threads, and I understand why you are doing this, but can someone please answer the question before it's locked so that I'm enlighted on the issue. It's something that I wondered the last time this happened.

Edit: Thanks for the info, Yo-ma-ma. I looked in the other thread and didn't see it. I noticed Anand's comment that he's working on it, but I didn't see anything about what was causing them.

My god this is annoying! An ad pops up every 5 to 30 seconds. At first I thought it was tv guide that was doing it but when I actually went into the forums I saw a bunch of threads talking about the pop ups. Well the pop ups seem to have gone away.

They are certainly still present. This is like surfing a Virtual Ave Site.

From the advertisers, in the banner, etc. All the info is in at least one other popup thread, probably the main one.
