I share my computer with my gf. I dont know what crappy websites she's been visiting, but apparently shes downloaded some self-installing pop up generator program and I cant get rid of it! I run Ad-Aware and Spybot, and both detects some nasty files, so I delete them. Then, I search for any programs that has been installed under Add/Remove programs, and I uninstall those as well.

But, everytime I restart my computer, the pop-ups are back! And it changes/resets my homepage back to some search site (not the intended homepage). Anybody know a way to get rid of them once and for all, without reformatting? Is it possible to just uninstall IE6 and reinstall it? Would that solve the problem?

Download and run Hijack This.

Worked for me when something grabbed my homepage and wouldn't let go.

Also, did you make sure you updated AdAware and SpyBot?

:confused::frown:

check your HOSTS file - make sure it's not been altered, then set it as read-only
go to start>run>msconfig and make sure nothing that shouldn't run at startup is enabled (under the Startup tab)
