Pop-Up Messages.

Recently I've been getting pop-up messages on my desktop, even when I'm not in my browser or using the connection. (I have broadband so I'm still connected to the internet, just not using it through a program.) They tell me that it's a new type of popup that is in windows or something like that, and they send me to websites where I can disable them. I think the only site is MessageStop.com where they list several pop up blocker programs.

I currently have Panicware's PopUp Stopper Pro, which only works when internet explorer is running, I think. I also have the latest version of Ad-Aware, which doesn't do too good of a job with pop-ups, but does a wonderful job at catching cookie additions and registry changes.

Is anyone else receiving these messages? Should I download one of the programs on that web-site? - Any recommendations for which one?

IMO No.

If your browser isn't open, then you have some type of program already installed trying to direct you to d/l more crap :|
 
Go to the START menu, Select Run and type in services.msc and click OK.

Now a new window will appear with lots of "services" on the right hand side...

Scroll down and find the Messenger service, select it, right click it and choose properties.

Under Startup Type select Disabled

Then click the Stop button.

Then click the Apply button.

Then click the OK button.

Every Windows XP (and 2000) machine has a "service" running behind the scenes called the "Messenger" service. What the spammers are doing is scanning thousands of IP addresses (the unique number your ISP gives to your PC whilst you are on the Internet) and checking to see if any of the PC's are open on UDP ports 135, 137 and 138 - TCP ports 135, 139 and 445.

When the spammers software detects your PC is running the "Messenger" service on these ports you get sent the Messenger Service Spam..
