pop-up in windows

I'm know that the pop-up windows have been covered in many threads but most have them are related to a web browser. My problem is that windows pop up even when I dont' even have a broswer up ... any suggetions? I have messenger disabled already. TIA!

Download and run Spybot or Adaware. Either of those should take care of it.

If that doesn't work, disable the Messenger Service.

Open up your control panel, administrative tools, Services, look for 'messenger', right click on it, properties, select "disabled" in the drop down menu

Messenger service is NOT MSN.
