POP! Smoke...power supply dead

I went home yesterday, get my computer started up and after a few minutes, POP! I see smoke coming out of my computer. My power supply is dead...hopefully that's the only thing. I'm collecting parts to test the rest of the system. Anyone know what could have caused it? I have a surge protector, but that didn't go off. I admit, it's the stock power supply that the computer came with two years ago.

sounds like it just had too much. Time to get a bigger and better one.

Let me guess. It was a Deer power supply. I had one violently explode on me a year ago. If did not damage any other components. Sounded like a fire cracker exploding.

how big was you PS and what were you running off of it?

Hey, I had a Deer P/S that failed on me too...

The only power supply failure I have had was a Deer also. Unfortunately, it took out a hard drive, floppy drive and CPU at the same time.

Ditto on the Deer. Had 1 fail 2 weeks ago and took out the CD-ROM, Floppy, and the Motherboard.

happend to me with a generic 300w. Was playing quake3. I hear a sorta of a zap/pop and I see a little streak of smoke come out. Tested everything with an extra P/S I had every worked. Hope you're as fortunate as I was.
