Pop music is only what you allow it to be.

I see quite a few threads on here complaining about certain pop musicians. Everyone seems to think that pop sucks. You're talking about 50 cent and Christina Agueliera (hoever you spell it) and a few people with only one name, etc.

If you don't like these people's music, you don't have to listen to it. If you don't like 50 cent, stop listening to it. The only reason I even know that 50 cent exists is because you guys keep mentioning him. I've never heard a 50 cent song in my life. Avioding pop music is not hard, I don't spend any special effort NOT to listen to 50 cent or any other musician.

As long as people are listening to it, the record companies are going to keep selling it. If you don't like it, there's plenty of other stuff out there to listen to, try expanding your listening habits beyond clear channel's top 40 radio hits, and you might like it.

I couldn't have said it better.

To be honest, I couldn't name ONE song by Christina Aguleria or any of the other performers that make up pop music. I rarely listen to the radio (unless it is sports radio) and I have never had a problem finding a bevy of new music to listen to. It is about branching out and finding something you like, as opposed to having what the record labels put out crammed down your throat.

agreed 😀
not all pop music is bad though. the thing that makes it the worst is how overplayed it is.. and the fact that some of it's so bad you can tell it's only made for the video.. (Dirrty?)

i choose to stay away for the most part.. 😀

That is exactly right.

I hate to say it but it seems like a hopeless situation.
POP Music (today's type of POP) is here to stay because people like to fit in & feel cool. To make it even worse is that the record companies make a killing in profits off these manufactured "artists"
... so the industry floods us every way that can with this sh!t - TV, radio, ADs selling cola products, etc

Also here's an article about another sad situation evolving the music biz:

good analysis!

it is harder to find really intelligent music on the radio, but it doens't mean that its not out there. just takes a little more effort. and alot of burned cds 🙂

it's trendy to knock pop music. i may not like britney spears, but i'm not going to knock someone if they do. music is all about entertainment, and if listening to pop makes you happy, great!

and its just as trendy to listen to POP music
i don't really care what a person listens to also, but there is a problem with POP music suffocating every other genre to death

The record companies are actually SELLING music these days? Wow, could have fooled me.

At a certain point (probably around 1999) my musical interests diverged from the contemporary path and headed backwards in time. I have really enjoyed discovering 'old' groups such as:

Beatles
Allman Brothers Band
Credence Clearwater Revival
Jimi Hendrix
Pink Floyd
Frank Sinatra
Simon & Garfunkel
Monkees
and lots of jazz

🙂

i agree. people need to realize that it got it's name because it is what is POPULAR. if it sells, then there are likely to be 20 clones of the same thing coming out. and if i could pull it off, i would gladly be one of those clones and make tons of money. that's the american dream, and boy i love it.
