Once upon a time, there was a girl with a unicorn and she was walking with her new found love to the maze of Ith. She thought back to just a few days earlier, before she had her love, before she had her unicorn.
Walking thorough the woods, picking mushrooms to use for supper, Ariel heard a whimpering sound coming from the over gown forest. Looking into that most dangerous place her mother hand warned her of, she glimpsed a most beautiful creature. The strikingly white horse, with a single spiraled, almost magical, horn coming from it?s head, was prostrate on the ground, almost mummified by creeping vines. Seeing this most beautiful creature Ariel walked closer to those forbidden woods than she ever had, fighting the pit in her stomach that demanded she go no closer. This beautiful creature had enchanted her both with its beauty and its complete helplessness.
The creature?s whimpering sounds stopped. Looking deeply into its eyes Ariel could see the life of this creature had been taken, it?s will to live ceased, and its breathing had ended. The inanity of her love and sorrow both overwhelmed her. With her teary eyes Ariel buried her face in the muzzle of the still creature, letting free all of the hurt that the loss of such beauty from the world brought. Seconds that felt like mints then mints that felt like hours passed for her, but when she pulled her head up away from the creature she found that the life had returned to its eyes.
In this she to was to overtaken by the vines, though both protected by the love that she gave to the beautiful creature. Desperately she cried out, as the vines grew around her and slowly she could feel her loving strength being sapped away from her. Soon a large man with caring eyes came in response to the cries. Desperately the man tore away the vines, cutting his hands and arms in a desperate sacrifice to free both Ariel and unicorn; quickly they both escaped the vine?s vampire like influence.
Gracious and kind, the man introduced himself as Eric, a mercenary. He explained that he was a man of the darkest of spirit, who would work for the destruction and death of others only to expand his own wealth. But in seeing this for the evil it was he had now turned away from it, left only as a wanderer accepting what charity people would give him and offering his sword in protection of those being taken advantage of.
He was there that day because he had been informed that a truly dark presence inhabited these woods. Recognizing the power of the creature that had now not only befriended her but now was part of her own soul, she demanded he bring her with him to face this vile darkness. As they made way through the wild forest she could feel the eyes of many hungry predators cast upon them.
Secretly, he would later admit to her, he allowed her to come with him because she had taken him similarly to the way the unicorn itself had taken her. When the eyes cloak of predatorily eyes would grow to nearly smothering weight Ariel would focus entirely on her own new deep feelings which would melt the cloak away and allow her to breath once more.
Growing tired and with the evening rains starting, Eric setup a tarp of wool to protect them from the rain. Under protection from the cold rain the unicorn found its place under the wool as Eric and Ariel slept close to each other cuddled up against the unicorn throughout the night.
Waking, the morning dew glistened off of the unicorns single horn, the light refracted under the protective wool, waking the couple. Looking up Ariel was almost blinded by the shimmering of the beautiful animal, then a sudden acknowledgment in her newly awoken mind that the creature was walking quickly into the woods. Quickly Eric collected the wool, and caught up with Ariel who herself had taken off with relative speed to catch up with her unicorn.
Shortly after the air became thick, the morning light turned to murky glow, and the trees themselves became hard to see through an ever growing fog. Sticking close together the trio made way through the woods, following faint whimpers, reminiscent of those heard by Ariel earlier, soon coming upon the source of evil, a black-sapphire monolith. Rays of dark and cold did show from the spaces between the black vines that ensnared the crystal.
The eight foot high crystal had ensnared with its bright darkness the vines of the woods. Upon following the trail of vines that surrounded the dark jewel Ariel found many other unicorns being drained of their love by this wretched darkness and a great sadness fell over her soul. Crying she tried to once again revive one of the unicorns, and even called for Eric and the unicorn of her soul to come and join her with the expression of much needed love, but this had no effect at all.
The crystal?s power was to much and though tore away at the vines around the hapless creatures the jade seemed simply to mock Ariel. Her heart swelled with righteous indignation and she became emotionally sure, and spiritually strong. She raged at the black vines that encapsulated the jewel, tarring away Eric joined with her but as they would clear vines away, cutting their hands, more and more of the black jewel?s glow shown through.
Quickly Eric fell to the ground sobbing, as she was assaulted by the most fear and sadness she?d felt in her life, she healed strong to her faith, anger, and love letting none of it tare her down until the last vine was torn away and with the help of her unicorn pushed over the node of evil.
Now shattered across the ground the unicorns struggled freed of the jade monolith?s grasp, Eric regained his stance, and now completely void of energies Ariel collapsed, caught by Ecic.
In a dream that could have been seconds or millennia Ariel was shown the beauty of the land she lived in, the long parries and deserts across the land, across that land she could see many jewels like the one she just destroyed, and far to the north the most vicious of sights, a near factory of goblins chopping away the horns of unicorns, destroying them, causing a great cry from the earth itself.
