Poor Wireless Signal

Just picked up a D-Link wire less card. The install went easy and the card is configured to mirror my wireless router setting and security. The router is in the next room. My laptop, which has the same wireless configuration, gets a booming signal in the same place as the desktop.

I called tech support and they say the card is defective. What do you guys think?

I say, does it work without watching the signal strength?

If so, don't worry about it. The laptop from work that I'm evaluating (*cough*wireless+car*cough*) over the weekend occasionally gets a really poor signal in the same spot that it had a good one in.

What kind of card? If it's a PCI card take it back and get a USB card. PCI cards suck. The antenna is hidden behind the case and the metal case acts as a shield blocking the signal.

I generally use Linksys USB Nics for my clients. They have excellent signal sensitivity. Use a nice long USB cable and place the NIC itself as high as possible (velcro it to the wall, place it on top of a high shel or bookcase, etc). The clearer the line of site to the access point, the better the signal.

BTW: I've never liked D-Link's Wifi NICs. I've had lots of problems with them. They're routers are great, but I prefer Linksys' NICs.

Hope this helps...
